The summer solstice marks the official start of summer and the longest day of the year in a given hemisphere. It occurs when Earth's tilt toward the sun is at its absolute maximum, making the sun appear at its highest point in the sky. The word "solstice" comes from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Because Earth reaches the extreme end of its orbital tilt, the Sun's path in the sky appears to pause and reverse direction over a period of a few days.
